8:33 pm - Game time set!

algeh
Ok, everyone who answered the poll (and diantha) can game on the 27th, so that's the date I'm setting. Unless anyone has a clever idea why not, I'm going to say "afternoon", since the consensus on length was 4-5 hours, and that seems like a nice afternoon-y length. So, unless there are any objections, I'm going to say 1400 on Monday the 27th, with a planned end time of 1600 or 1700, or when everyone gets hungry and scatters for dinner.

Everyone's place is available then, so I don't know if anyone has any strong opinions of where to meet. I'm tentatively going to say qousqous's for old time's sake, because it's the most convenient for me, because he has a table with chairs, and because he has KITTENS. If anyone has any reasons to hold it elsewhere, let me know and we can change that.

I will announce character building guidelines on Christmas day. If anyone needs a run through my GURPS library or other such things, let me know and I'll see what I can work out. If anyone knows someone else who might like our style of game, we could take on a few more players, but we have a nice-sized group as-is. I *might* try to contact Chris D., but I'm not sure I know his number anymore. Anyone else who does is welcome to take that on instead. Also, I assume that Elizabeth is out of town for break, and Kelly is in Eugene. Anyone who can challenge that assumption and provide contact information is welcome to do so, because then it would be all old time reunion-y and stuff.

See y'all on the 27th!

1:45 pm - One-shot?

algeh
So, I'm thinking of running a one-shot over break. GURPS 3rd edition (no way am I spending money on all new books, I already have a huge stack, thanks), characters made before showing up (I'll work with people on it over phone/IM/email/lj), haven't decided on a setting or plot quite yet. After I see who's interested and how many people, I'll have a much better idea. There's already been one suggestion to just run the group adventure out of the back of the old 3rd ed (not revised) book, if no one remembers it well enough that that would be a problem (and assuming I can find it in my gaming stuff). Otherwise, I have a few different ideas, but will probably do another modern running-around-Europe-or-something type game unless I get suggestions or inspiration strikes.

This game will, in terms of where the players will be expected to be showing up to, be in Portland somewhere, so bear that in mind when filling in the poll.

12:27 am - New game!

algeh
I'm going to run a new GURPS game this summer. Probably TL 4ish. I'm thinking fantasy world with only clerical magic. Let me know if you're interested, along with what type of character would be most interesting to you, if you have a specific idea in mind.

2:25 pm - Game?

algeh
Are we having game this weekend? I seem to recall delegating booking a room to either diantha or ebalmer but never heard what came of it. Did that happen? If so, when (and where) are we meeting? If not, what's plan B? Or is everyone so swamped with school that they don't want to think about game yet?

11:19 am - Game......!!!!
penumbrafox Game? On Tuesday? At noon? Grilled cheese and ramen or pizza? Or other assorted random things? I have less than a week left. We need to finish this. School starts the monday following next, and since it seems Im going by train, I have to leave two days befor I arrive, it also helps to arrive on Sunday, rather than Monday. So anyways, Chris? Good for you? Let me know when you can.N

11:25 pm - GAME!!!
penumbrafox Well, Sarah and I are back, along with Mary in tow. I realized very recently, that I do not have very much more time left here. Infact, I have anywhere from a week to two. Which means, we need to start stepping up things if we dare want to finish my little adventure. When does anyone want to game? And how far should we push it up to? I sorta talked to Mary, sorta as in just slightly, and she did show interest in being a fighter. The earliest I can be at school is the 18th. Which is out of the question for me, the latest, when school starts, is the 26th. Im thinking of going by train, which means I have to leave two days before I want to be there. But anyways... GAME GAME GAME!!!.

ps.. I hope everyone had a good time while we were gone. *waves*

10:05 pm - Introducting Carvel

algeh
carvel is in his early forties. He is the current leader figure of a small religious commune (I'm thinking from what is now Alberta or Saskatchewan, but I should probably do a bit more research) which raises sheep and trains dogs. His wife, Kelda, is the veterinarian for the commune's animals and they also have five children, Sosanna, Betka, Nikolais, Geofri, and Teresina . Sosanna is 21 and married, Betka is 19 and married, Nikolais is 18 and due to be wedded at the spring ceremony this year, Geofri is 16 and due to become an adult at the fall ceremony this year, and Teresina is 14. All of them are accompanying him, along with most of the commune. A few chose to stay back on Earth, so that new converts would have a place to go as they discovered the faith. His youngest brother, Tynko, is now leading those who have chosen to stay.

As the religious and unofficial political leader of his commune, Carvel has spent much of his life in the study of his faith. His position is a hereditary one, held by his father until his father's death and which his eldest son is already in training for. His father died a few years back when he was hit by a car while trying to rescue a sheep which had strayed, and Carvel is considered to be very young for his position. Previously opposed to leaving Earth, his father's death convinced him that his people needed to be on a new world with more space for their rustic lifestyle. Carvel is very devout in his faith, and has spent many hours studying the holy writings and the journals of former leaders.

Carvel loves animals and invites some of the family dogs to sleep inside at night, which is uncommon for working dogs such as they have. He is also often found talking to the dogs and sheep. As with other members of the commune, he wears mainly clothes made out of wool and woven by members of the commune, although he does not often have time to weave them himself. Although he has special robes for ceremonial occasions, he is normally seen in a simple sweater and pair of slacks. He wears his long blond hair in a braid down his back, and has a full beard which he trims when he remembers to, often using equipment meant to be used on the sheep.

So....Questions? Corrections? Comments?

9:18 am - Meet Obie

diantha
p>Obediah Baumman is a farmer. He's 23 and slightly overweight. He's rather nieve and gullible and doesn't have a good sense of city manners, is intensly patriotic (I'm guessing he's republican), and likes to cary a bible around (allthough he doesn't preach, he just likes to read his bible). He also is never withough his cowboy hat with an american flag bandana tied around the brim. In other words, he's a complete hick. </p>

Obie is really good at farming, and otherwise he's pretty good at some smattering of active type skills, and he's a good mechanic (specialization: farm equiptment). He also rides, shoots a rifle, and laso's stuff. Oh, and plays the gitarr.

As for back story, he is from an old farming family in Milo, Iowa. His family has been farmers as far back as he can rember. As a younger son, he was not going to inherant the family farm. He mostly spent his time working as a mechanic at the local farm equiptment store. He was the mission's most eager volunteer, when he heard that colonizing new worlds was the 'patriotic' thing to do

So, that's obie, is he too low tech? I didn't do much with the TL9 thing... because he's kinda a hick, in any TL. Any suggestions for revisions and stuff would be appreciated

1:19 am - More guidelines

clipdude
Thanks to Verizon and their crappy DSL problems, I am up late writing this (whereas if Verizon's DSL worked correctly, I would have written this already and would be sleeping now).

First, I answered many of your questions to the last post.

Please don't take the wealth (dis)advantages. Land is to be parceled out equally and your digital money will mean nada on the new planet.

Also, don't spend a lot of time deciding what possessions you have. Much equipment is being sent, and you aren't allowed to take a lot with you anyway. At most, you will have a few books, or a weapon, or whatnot. You will probably only be allowed 20 lbs, at the most. Also, due to a plot twist early in the adventure, you may or may not have access to your stuff for a while (or ever).

Update: I forgot to mention: someone may want to take Driving: Contragravity Craft. Contragravity, while supposedly TL12, was discovered by the North American Military Command about 50 years ago. As such, some Contragravity Vehicles are in use by the military and some big industrial operations. (The average can't get them for personal use, because they are enormously expensive.) Anyone with military experience (even the Reserves) might have had the chance to be trained. Otherwise, you probably were a commericial pilot, etc. Contragravity devices are too bulky to be used in flying belts.

You don't have to take it, though, if it doesn't fit in with your character concept. (There might be a suitible NPC around that can pilot Contragravity if none of you want to.)

10:26 pm - Character creation guidelines

clipdude
This is my first time doing this, so here goes.

You are going to be colonists headed for an uninhabited Earth-like planet light years away from Earth. You will be transported in suspended animation. The colonization is a government project, but you can be from any walk of life--you just want to settle on this new planet. Oh, and you can kiss your old lives goodbye, because it would take decades to get back. Standard 100 pt characters, TL 9, except without FTL tech. You left Earth around 2230, but you won't be using the Gregorian calendar when you get to the planet. You might want to take some TL9 weapons skills. We might be taking the GURPS combat system for a spin.

More details to follow. Hopefully, this is enough info to get started.

9:39 pm - Game? *looks hopeful*

algeh
First off, I haven't read anything but this community on LiveJournal for several days, because I've been busy (Read: I bought new books when penumbrafox and I went shopping Wednesday and have also been cleaning my room and found even more books). So if I'm missing something important, please let me know.

That being said, will there be game this upcoming weekend? If I have a grasp of what's going on, it's clipdude's turn to run game and my turn to bring food. I'm bringing cheese ravioli (with tomato sauce) and probably cheese bread. If I'm feeling adventurous, maybe caesar salad. Some kind of dessert may or may not happen. If nothing else, I'll try to remember to bring popsicles. Chris, if you aren't ready to run game yet, please let us know ASAP. I'd prefer not to run my game this upcoming weekend (I'm still trying to figure out what would be fun to do from here ^_^;;) but I will if no one else is prepped and you're not ready to start. If you are ready, it'd be nice if you posted character guidelines by Wednesdayish so that we can all have some sort of character concept ready in time and don't have to waste hours of gametime figuring out who our characters are. It's your game though, so it's really up to you. Just so you know, the less warning I have, the more likely I am to end up playing an angsty, over-the-hill, washed-up, drunken male bard. (It's a nasty habit, I'm trying to quit. ;p)

Oh yeah, when are we playing this weekend? 1400-2000 Sunday again?

11:26 pm - The future of SquankyGURPS

algeh
I think it's time to discuss whether we should split this community into seperate ones. It's been taken over by planning stuff (which we need to do somewhere) and with all of the different games we're running it could be kind of weird to have character stuff for all of them intermixed anyway. I propose that we create a seperate community for each game and devote this journal to coordinating stuff like meeting times and other administrative stuff. chihuahuachase would become the community for my game, and communities could be created for the other three. (I'm perfectly willing to donate the codes for this, since I have a royal assload of them.) So anyway, I made a poll about it.

Poll #47887 The fate of this community

Should we use seperate journals for In-Game and Out-of-Game stuff?

Yes, one In-Game communtiy for all games and this one for Out-of-Game
1(33.3%)
Yes, this journal for out of game stuff, and a seperate community for each game for in-game/game specific stuff
2(66.7%)
No, keep everything here

Tony Danza?

I made an account for Zane, my character in diantha's game:

Are we going to continue posting character diaries here, or are we going to keep them in the characters' journals? (squankygurps seems flooded mainly with chatter such as this.)

Also, are we meeting tomorrow or Sunday?

2:11 am - I'm a big dork

algeh
I made a journal for my character in diantha's game. sweetcerise. I'm posting in-character entries in it when I remember to, although I may still fiddle with stuff. The userpic didn't quite turn out how I wanted, but my dad's scanner doesn't work so I can't post the pencil version which I like a bit better. If y'all encourage me, I might make one for Leander. :p
